Biography

In the 1950s and 1960s Filipino swimmer Haydée Coloso won ten medals at three editions of the Asian Games. At the 1954 Games in Manila she was just 16-years-old when she won gold in the 100 metres freestyle and 100 metres butterfly, along with a team gold in the 4 × 100 metres freestyle relay. Four years later she won four medals at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo with gold in the 4 × 100 metres medley relay, and silver in the 100 metres freestyle, 200 metres freestyle, and the 4 × 100 metres freestyle relay. Coloso represented the Philippines at the 1960 Roma Olympics but had a disappointing Games after failing to progress from the heats of the 100 metres freestyle. She swam at her third and final Asian Games in 1962 in Jakarta, winning a silver and two bronze medals. She retired from competitive swimming shortly after to teach at the Far Eastern University. From 1953 to 1955 Coloso was named as the Woman Swimmer of the Year by the Philippine Sportswriters Association. She was inducted into the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.
