Biography

Herbert von Kuhlberg was the son of a merchant of German descent. Placing fourth in the first heat of the 100 metres freestyle in 1912, he was the first swimmer to represent Russia at Olympic Games. In 1913, von Kuhlberg enrolled at the Department of Commerce of the Riga Polytechnic Institute but was drafted the following year to serve in the 2nd Life Dragoon Pskov Regiment to fight in World War I. With the rank of an ensign, he was wounded near Daugavpils, Latvia, and died from his wounds a few days later.
