Biography

Ukrainian Vadim Yaroshchuk took up swimming in 1973 and made the Soviet national team in 1985. Equally strong in butterfly and individual medley, he represented the Soviet Union in both styles internationally but, at major international meets, usually found his fame in IM. During his career Yaroshchuk competed at five major international tournaments and medaled in every one. He won two bronze medals, in the 200 IM and the medley relay, at the 1988 Olympics, silver in the 400 IM and bronze in the 200 IM at the 1986 World Championships, and swam on the 1989 European medley champion relay team, while taking silver in the 400 IM at the 1985 European Championships. He also won silver in the 200 IM silver and bronze in the 200 fly at the 1987 European Championships. Yaroshchuk won 12 Soviet titles: 50 butterfly – 1987; 100 butterfly – 1988; 200 butterfly – 1987-89, 200 IM – 1987-89, 400 IM – 1985-87 and the 1988 medley relay.

Personal Best: 100 m butterfly – 54.17 (1988); 200 m butterfly – 1:58.51 (1987); 200 m individual medley – 2:01.67 (1987); 400 m individual medley – 4:18.87 (1987).
