Biography

Yevgeny Seredin was the best Soviet male butterfly sprinter at the end of the 1970s. During his career Seredin competed at the 1976 and 1980 Olympics, the 1977 European Championships, and the 1978 World Championships. His only major championships medal was silver in the 1980 Olympic medley relay and his best individual placing at an international meet, fifth in the 100 butterfly, came at the same Olympics. Domestically, Seredin won eight Soviet titles: 100 butterfly – 1976, 1978-79; medley relay – 1977-79; 1976 4x100 free relay; and 1979 4x200 free relay. Seredin retired from competition in 1983 and, until his untimely death from a heart attack, worked as a swimming coach in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg).
