Biography

Jo Harshberger was only 15-years-old when she swam at the 1972 Olympics. She swam for Newport High School in Bellevue, Washington and the Lake Washington Swim Club. Purely a distance freestyler, Harshbarger set world records in the 800 metre freestyle in 1972 and 1974, and in the 1,500 metres in 1973. She was a silver medalist in the 800 metres at the 1973 World Championships. She later swam for Stanford University. Harshbarger won the 1973 AAU title outdoors in the 1,500 metre freestyle, and in 1972 and 1975 was AAU indoor champion in the 1,650 yard freestyle.

In 1995 Harshbarger was working for Microsoft when she was accused of theft and forgery following the disappearance of between $8,000 and $20,000 from Microsoft corporate accounts. She pleaded guilty in January 1996, and re-paid Microsoft, later moving to Portland, Oregon, where she took another job.
