Biography

David Johnson swam for Yale University, where he graduated in 1969, and the Philadelphia Aquatic Club. At Yale Johnson helped win the 1968 NCAA title inn the 4x200 yard freestyle relay. Johnson made the 1968 Olympic team although he had broken his arm in May 1968, and swam many laps with his arm in a cast, while wrapped in a plastic bag. He later attended Yale Medical School and then became an orthopaedic surgeon, specializing in sports medicine. Johnson was team doctor for the US Olympic team at the 1980 Winter Olympics. He continued to swim in medical school and won three gold medals at the 1973 Universiade, in the 100 and 200 backstroke and the medley relay. Johnson did his internship and residency at George Washington University and later practiced in Washington, DC, mainly out of the MedStar Washington Hospital.
