Biography

Dan Jorgensen swam in college at the University of Southern California (USC), where he won two NCAA titles. Primarily a distance freestyler, he won gold in the 1988 Olympic 4x200 free relay, adding a bronze medal in that event in 1992. Jorgensen won gold in the same race at the 1989 and 1991 Pan Pacific Championships. He also won four individual medals at the Pan Pacs, with silver in the 1987 1,500 free and 1989 400 free, and bronze in the 1989 800 free and 1991 400 free. At the World Championships Jorgensen won a silver in the 1991 4x200 relay, and three bronzes in 1986 – in the 400 free, 1,500 free, and the 4x200 free relay. Jorgensen’s brother, Lars, also swam at the 1988 Olympics in the 1,500 freestyle.

Jorgensen later settled in Beaverton, Oregon with his wife and two daughters. He worked various jobs for a few years, including working in a steel mill, and selling medical equipment, until he caught on with S. R. Smith, a company making pool deck equipment, and for whom he later became vice-president.
