1966 when he took the AAU indoor championship. In 1967 he won a silver medal at the Pan-American Games and was the NCAA champion. Wales retired from competition after the 1968 Olympics, enrolling in law school at the University of Virginia. He was called to action in Vietnam, however, but later returned to complete his law studies at the Charlottesville campus. He became a lawyer in Cincinnati and was later president of the U.S. Swimming Federation.
