Dimitrios Kougevetopoulos had a lengthy career in water polo as both a player and a coach. Domestically Kougevetopoulos represented Ethnikos Piraeus, winning 21 Greek championship titles from 1962 to 1983, only missing out in 1971. He was part of the national team for more than a decade, competing at the Olympics (1968, 1972), the World Championships (1973, 1978), and the European Championships (1970, 1977). After his playing career Kougevetopoulos turned to coaching, leading the national youth side to silver at the 1995 World Championships in Dunkirk.
