Biography

Endre Győrfi began his sports career as a breaststroke swimmer and then switched to the polo team where he ended up in goal. He finished high school in Kaposvár, and then in 1939 he went to Budapest to attend the Technical University. He was signed by MAFC where his magnificent saves were also needed for the team to be promoted to the first division.

In 1947 Győrfi was a member of the gold medal team that participated in the World College Championship in Paris. He was the goalkeeper of the silver medal-winning Hungarian team at the 1948 Summer Olympic Games water polo tournament held in London. He got his chance after the number one goalkeeper injured his wrist. Between 1948 and 1949 he played for the Hungarian men’s water polo team nine times (seven times for the B team). He struggled, however, with a persistent elbow injury for a long time. In 1949 he transferred to the Honvéd. In 1957 he officially retired after an international tournament in Moskva.

Győrfi was already working as a sports manager during his active career. After World War II he reorganized the water polo team of MTE, and in 1948 he was elected president of the MAFC. At the end of his career he held a management position at Vasas SC. Returning to Kaposvár he first worked for Vasas in Kaposvár, then became president of the Somogy County Swimming Association, and later managed the swimmers of Rákóczi. With his connections and organizational work he helped a lot in the construction of the first indoor swimming pool in the countryside in the late 1960s.
