Biography

Werner Arnold was the first heavyweight weightlifter of international class from the former GDR. He was East German champion in 1957-61 and 1965. In 1956 he finished sixth at the European Championships, and in 1959 he was ninth at the Worlds and sixth at the Europeans. In 1960 Arnold placed 12th at the Roma Olympics. In 1964 he failed to qualify for the Games. Arnold worked as a saddler.
