Biography

East German weightlifter Frank Mantek won the bronze medal at the 1980 Moskva Olympics in the middle-heavyweight class. One year later he won the East German title and in 1982 he earned another bronze medal at the Worlds. He retired in 1983 due to a shoulder injury.

Mantek then worked with his home club SC Karl-Marx-Stadt (now renamed Chemnitz) and was a sports administrator in the East German Weightlifting Association. After re-unification he was employed by the German Weightlifting Association as a national coach and later sports director. His main pupil was 2008 Olympic Champion Matthias Steiner. In 1996 Mantek suffered a heart attack, which was attributed to doping abuse during the GDR era.
