Biography

Roberto “Tony” Urrutia had the following podium finishes at major championships: 1st in the 1977 World Championships Lightweight class (315.0 kg); 1st in the 1978 World Championships Middleweight class (347.5 kg); 1st in the 1979 World Championships Middleweight class (345.0 kg); 1st in the 1975 Pan-American Games Lightweight class (300.0 kg); 1st in the 1979 Pan-American Games Middleweight class (340.0 kg). He set seven world records – five in the snatch and two in the total. Urrutia later defected to the United States and competed at the 1988 and 1992 Olympics for the USA.
