Biography

Greco-Roman wrestler Fredi Albrecht, son of Herbert Albrecht, was fifth in the heavyweight class at the 1972 München Olympics. Four years later he was eliminated in the third round in the same event. He also won silver medals at both the 1975 World and European Championships, having won a bronze medal the previous year at the Europeans. Domestically, he won eight East German titles from 1969-71, 1973-77, with him being runner-up in 1972.

Fredi Albrecht later became an international referee, and participated in six more Olympic Games in that capacity from 1980-2004. He only missed the Los Angeles Games due to the Eastern boycott. After re-unification, Albrecht moved to Würzburg in West Germany.
