Biography

Known as “Fogata” (Bonfire), Nelson Demarco was a member of the strong Uruguayan basketball team for about a decade. During this period, “La Celeste” (the Urguayan team) won four South American titles (1947, 1949, 1953 and 1955), after placing second in 1945. In addition, Demarco and Uruguay won two bronze medals at the 1952 and 1956 Olympics. He was less successful at the World Championships, placing 6th in 1954, and withdrawing from the inaugural 1950 event. Besides playing 47 matches for Uruguay, Demarco played for the Montevideo Basket Ball Club his entire career, leading the club to its first ever title in 1954.
