Biography

Australian professional tennis player Rennae Stubbs specialised in the doubles, winning six Grand Slam titles and reaching the rank of world number one. Stubbs was known for her longevity in the sport, playing on Australia’s Fed Cup for 17 years from 1992 to 2011, and competing at four successive Olympic Games. After her playing career she became a commentor working for the Seven Network, Amazon Prime, and ESPN.

Stubbs began her career winning 10 doubles titles on the ITF Circuit between March 1988 and November 1991, when she was often partnered with compatriot Kate McDonald. Playing on the WTA Tour Stubbs won a total of 60 doubles titles from February 1992 to June 2010, with her first title coming at the Asian Open with Helena Suková. Stubbs was frequently partnered with American Lisa Raymond but also had lengthy successful partnerships with Lori McNeil, Cara Black, and Květoslava Hrdličková.

Despite predominantly being a doubles player Stubbs made her Olympic début in the singles at the 1996 Atlanta Games where she lost to Maggy Maleeva in the first round. Stubbs was also scheduled to play in the doubles in Atlanta with Nicole Provis-Bradtke but the pair did not start the event. For the next three Olympics; 2000 Sydney, 2004 Athína, and 2008 Beijing, Stubbs played exclusively in the doubles. She partnered with Jelena Dokic, Alicia Molik, and Samantha Stosur, respectively, with her best result coming with Molik when they reached the quarter-finals.

At Grand Slams Stubbs won six titles, four in the doubles, and two in the mixed doubles. She won the 2000 Australian Open, the 2001 Wimbledon championship, and the 2001 US Open, all with Lisa Raymond. Stubbs also won Wimbledon in 2004, this time with Cara Black as her partner. In the mixed doubles Stubbs won the 2000 Australian Open with Jared Palmer, and the 2001 US Open with Todd Woodbridge.
