Lloyd Evans

Lloyd Evans had a lengthy running career, but his marathon results in Canada were usually overshadowed by four-time Boston Marathon winner Gérard Côté, who competed in the same era. Evans took up distance running in the early 1930s and first entered the Boston Marathon in 1938, where he placed 15th, a feat that he repeated in 1939. After slipping to 17th in 1940, he did not return to the competition until he came in fifth in 1944 and 1945. He was sixth in 1946, 11th in 1947, and sixth again in 1948, the same year that he was selected to represent Canada at the London Olympics, as the third overall performer in the nation behind Côté and Walter Fedorick. At the Games, however, Evans was the highest-ranked Canadian, 16th, one place ahead of Côté and seven ahead of Fedorick.

Evans’ career wound down after the Olympics, and although he entered the Boston Marathon as late as 1952, he never again competed in it. In addition to marathon running, he also competed in long-distance snowshoe races for many years.
