Biography

Long-distance and cross-country runner José Andía represented Club Atlético Excursionista. In 1920 Andía finished as the runner-up in the cross-country race in Tolosa and in Bilbao, before winning the Spanish cross-country title in 1922. He then undertook a brief spell of military service before winning another national title in 1924. Andía ran in the cross-country race at the 1924 Paris Olympics on one of the hottest days ever recorded in the French capital. He was in fifth place as the race entered the stadium but collapsed just before the finish line. Andía retired from athletics later the same year and returned to Madrid.
