Biography

Robert Grisar was a native of Antwerpen, and a member of a notable family which were the founders of the Beerschot Football and Athletic club in Antwerpen. He was an active tennis player in his younger years, back until at least 1911. A member of the Organizing Committee for the 1920 Olympic Games, he also played in the tennis doubles tournament at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics, partnered with Maurice Van Den Bemden. They lost in the first round in straight sets to France’s Jean-Pierre Samazeuilh and Daniel Lawton.

His wife, Marguerite, née Good (the sister of Suzanne Laurencin), who he married in 1914, was Belgian mixed doubles champion in 1921. The couple had a daughter and a son and later divorced in the 1930s. Following his divorce, Grisar settled in Québec, Canada and worked for Franki Canada Ltd. in the Montréal area for over 30 years, retiring as director of advertising and public relations in 1972 when he was 82.
