Biography

Lionel Price took up basketball as a way to keep in shape while he was a student at the Polytechnic Secondary School from 1938 through 1941. He kept up this practice throughout World War II and, after the conflict, was selected to represent Great Britain in the basketball tournament at its home Summer Olympics in 1948. There, the country finished last in its pool in the group stage and lost two of its three classification matches, leaving it in 20th place overall out of 23 nations. Price played in all eight games, but never again appeared in a major international tournament, instead completing his studies to become a chartered accountant. He later worked in property development, ran a mattress business, and helped carry the torch on its way to the 2012 Summer Olympics, also held in London.
