Biography

In an exceptionally long career, Norman Drake first competed at the British Empire Games in 1934 when he placed sixth in the hammer and, after missing the 1938 Games, placed fourth 16 years later at the 1950 British Empire Games in Auckland (NZL). He also competed in two Olympic Games (1936, 1948) but did not qualify for the final on either occasion. Drake would undoubtedly have won further international honors if the hammer had been included regularly in dual meets before the war. At the AAAs he won the title in 1936 and 1948, placed second in 1939 and third in 1946. He won the Northern title every year 1934-51 and was also an outstanding coach of his event.

Personal Best: HT – 49.93 (163-10) (1946).
