As a sprinter Rainer Berger placed fourth in the 4×100 relay at the 1966 European Championships. He also managed to win the East German titles in 1964-67 in the sprint relay, in 1966 in the 4×200 m, and in 1964-66 and 1969 in the indoor 4×2 laps relay. He was part of the German sprint relay in the mixed German team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games which was eliminated in the semifinals.
