Biography

The West German soccer team at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics was part of the mixed German team that was defeated 2-1 by the Soviet Union in the first round and immediately eliminated. Goalkeeper Manfred Eglin was a substitute and did not play. Domestically he played for Karlsruher FV from 1953-57 and Stuttgarter Kickers 1957-63. During the Olympic qualification matches against the former GDR in 1959, Eglin played in both matches, which West Germany won 2-0 and 2-1. They were the only two matches he played during qualification.

In 1970 Eglin, a graduated sports teacher, was employed by the Bundesausschuß Leistungssport (Federal Committee on High Performance Sports) in Frankfurt am Main, and co-ordinated the sailing, canoeing and amateur boxing until his retirement in 1999.
