A fine half-back or full-back, he played for the RAF and the Combined Services and won representative honours with the Hockey Association, Buckinghamshire, and the South of England. Thompson played club hockey for Richmond and also for the international touring side Llamas.
At the time of the Melbourne Olympics, Thompson had not played international hockey, but made his England début against France in October 1957, nearly a year after the Olympics.
