The son of a Bournemouth master butcher, Charles Vye was educated at Bournemouth Collegiate before going to University College, Oxford. He was a goalkeeper on the university hockey team and won the first of two Blues in 1950. Prior to going to Oxford, Vye served in the Dorset Regiment, joining them in 1944.
After university, Vye became a schoolteacher and between 1951-58 was a master at Highgate College. He continued playing hockey for Teddington and Hampstead, and was regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in southern England. Not having won an England international cap, Vye made his Great Britain début in the 4-2 win over Germany at in April 1956. He was then selected for the Melbourne Olympics later that year but was kept out of the team by David Archer. Vye’s brother Michael was also a Bournemouth hockey player who won representative honours with the South of England and Middlesex.
