Christian Haas

Christian Haas was the son of Maria Sturm-Haas, third in the pentathlon at the 1954 European Championships in athletics, and Karl-Friedrich Haas. During his sports career Christian Haas was the top West German sprinter. He was educated as an industry businessman and worked as a toy buyer for the mail order concern “Quelle” until its insolvency in 2011.

He was nominated for the 1980 Moscow Games but could not compete because of the USA-led boycott. In 1984 and 1988 he took part in the 100 metres, and placed sixth in the 4x100 relay in 1988. At the 1983 World Championships Haas reached the 100 metres final (sixth) and the relay final (fifth). Four years later he was eliminated in the second round in both the 100 and 200, but again placed fifth with the relay. At the European Championships he won a relay bronze medal in 1982, and took part in the 100 metres in 1982 and 1986. At the World Indoors Haas placed seventh over 60 metres in 1987, winning gold at the 1984 European Indoors, adding silver medals in 1980 and 1983. Domestically Haas collected 10 West German titles, adding 8 indoors, from 1979-88.
