Biography

High jumper Hans Martens could not qualify for the final at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Domestically he had five runner-up finishes at German Nationals in 1933-35, and 1938-39. Martens was a soldier in the German Navy, eventually in the administration at Kiel.

His brother Christian, former gymnast, handball player and triple jumper, later became an influential sports administrator, serving as a member of the Track and Field Association of Schleswig-Holstein from 1946-71, women’s sport manager for the German Track and Field Association from 1947-49, and was a member of the IAAF Women’ Committee from 1952-56.

Personal Best: HJ – 1.96 (1935).
