Biography

József Szécsényi was a discus thrower who competed at the 1960 and 1964 Olympics, narrowly missing the podium, placing fourth in 1960 and fifth in 1964. Szécsényi was World University Games Champion in 1953 and finished second at that event in 1957. He competed at the European Championships three times, in 1954, 1958, and 1962, winning a bronze medal in 1954. He also won the Hungarian title in the discus nine times, in 1955-56, 1958-63, and 1965. Szécsényi set eight Hungarian records in his career, and in 1959 set the European record of 58.33 metres. He was the first Hungarian to throw over 60 metres. He later became a throwing coach and a professor of physical education.
