Biography

Andersen, nicknamed Flisa (Splinter) due to his slim figure, finished third in the pole vault at the 1900 Paris Olympics, the first Olympic medal won by a Norwegian athlete. He was also a decent high jumper, placing fourth in Paris, and was Norwegian Champion in both events in 1896, 1897, and 1900. After the turn of the century he turned to artistic gymnastics, winning a gold medal as a member of the Norwegian team at the 1906 Intercalated Games, and a silver medal at the same event in London 1908. Andersen worked in the construction business in his youth. After his retirement from sport, he worked as a hotel garderobier until his retirement. He died in his home town of Oslo in 1951 at age 75.

Personal Bests: HJ – 1.80 (1899); PV – 3.20 (1900).
