The team competition saw an innovation when nine teams were involved. Of these nine, three are listed in the official results as “hors concours,” which means they were outside of the competition. This was a Greek and a Swedish team and a team of Danish women. The Danish women represent the first time that women athletes ever appeared inside the main stadium at the Olympic Games, even if it was only as an exhibition.

The event finished with the teams in the following order: Norway, Denmark, Italy (Pistoja/Florence), Italy (Rome), Germany and Hungary. Thus, it would appear that the Norwegians “won” the event. However, the regulations noted that teams scoring between 18 and 20 points were awarded first place and teams scoring between 16 and 18 points were awarded second place. Thus, according to those regulations, Norway and Denmark would both win first place and both Italian teams and Germany would be given second place. It is difficult to know what to do with this scoring system, a variant of which was also used in the individual competitions.
