Biography

Kent Bernard was a Trinidadian track and field athlete who specialised in the 400 metres, with him being a key part of the relay quartet that won several medals in the during the 1960s and early 1970s. In 1964 Bernard, Edwin Skinner, Edwin Roberts, and Wendell Mottley won bronze in the 4 × 400 metres relay at the Tokyo Olympics, finishing just one-tenth of a second behind Great Britain. He also reached the semi-finals in the 400 metres at the Tokyo Games. Two years later he then won gold in the 4 × 440 yards relay and silver in the 440 yards at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica.

Bernard had further success at the British Commonwealth Games, winning silver in the 4 × 400 metres relay at the 1970 Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. The following year he won bronze at the 1971 Pan American Games in the 4 × 400 metres relay (with Trevor James, Ben Cayenne, and Edwin Roberts), and finished seventh in the 400 metres. Bernard spent some time living the United States where he was a student at the University of Michigan.
