Biography

In 1980 Margarita Ponomaryova graduated from school in Baykonur, before moving to Leningrad where she studied at the planning and economic faculty of the Leningrad Institute of Finance and Economics. In 1991 she graduated from the Military Institute of Physical Culture with a biomedical degree.

At the 1991 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Sevilla (Seville), Ponomaryova won a silver medal. She also won a silver, and bronze, at the 1993 World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart. At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, she finished second in both her 400 hurdles heat and semi-final to the eventual American silver medallist, Sandra Farmer-Patrick. However, in the final, Ponomaryova finished a disappointing sixth.

Personal Best: 400H – 53.48 (1993).
