Mikhail Bariban competed as a triple jumper for the Soviet Union at the 1972 München Olympics, placing ninth. Bariban was the 1973 Universiade Champion, and at the European Indoors, he finished third in 1973 and second in 1972. In 1968 he came to international attention when he won both the long jump and triple jump at the European Junior Championships. Bariban was Soviet Champion in the triple jump in 1972 and led the 1973 world list in the event.
