Biography

Igor Lapshin was one of the top triple jumpers of the world in the late 1980s. He won a 1988 Olympic silver, a 1990 European Indoor title, a 1991 World Indoor, and a 1989 Universiade gold, adding a 1990 European Championships bronze. After the fall of the Soviet Union, he continued to compete for a few seasons, but with less success. Representing the newly independent Belarus, Lapshin competed at the 1993 Worlds, but did not get out of qualifying. After finishing his sports career, Lapshin worked as an athletics coach, serving as coach of the Belorussian national team.
