Biography

Chen Li was a Chinese professional tennis player. Chen achieved a career-best singles ranking of 112 in the world in October 1996, and a doubles ranking of 135 in the world in February 1995. She won seven medals at the Asian Games and competed at two Olympics.

Chen won seven doubles titles and six singles titles at ITF finals. Her first doubles title came in May 1990 when she and Li Fang won in Manila. Chen’s first singles title was in Sekisho, Japan, in September 1991, when she beat Park Seong-Hui of South Korea in straight sets. On the WTA Tour Chen and Li Fang won the doubles tournament at the 1994 China Open.

Chen was prolific at the Asian Games winning three bronze, three silver, and a gold. Again, Chen was paired with Li Fang when they won the women’s doubles at the 1998 Bangkok Games. Chen also represented China in 17 ties in the Fed Cup.

Chen competed in the singles tournament at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics where she lost to Mary Joe Fernandez in the first round. Four years later Chen competed in both the singles and doubles at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Unfortunately for Chen her first round singles match was against the great Monica Seles who beat Chen in straight sets. In the doubles she teamed with Yi Jingqian with the pair reaching the second round.
