Biography

After placing third at the 1920 Olympics, Gus Pope topped the world discus rankings in 1921 with a throw of 152-7 (46.51). He won the AAU title three years straight from 1920 and, while attending the University of Washington, he was NCAA champion in both the shot and discus in 1921. Pope, who threw with a unique style that he had developed himself, made the Olympic team again in 1924 when he placed fourth. Pope also played football in college for the Huskies in 1919-20.
