Biography

Robert Schauffler was the son of missionaries and was born in Brünn (at that time belonging to Austria), carrying dual US and Austrian citizenhip. He studied at Northwestern University from 1898-99, Princeton in 1901, and the University of Berlin from 1902-03. Schauffler studied with cellists Steindel, Schröder, and Hekking in Berlin, but his career was as an editor, author, and lecturer. He was severely wounded in World War I on 26 September 1918 at Montfaucon. Schauffler eventually settled in New York City where he lived until his death.
