Biography

Sofia Marinou played singles and mixed doubles at the 1906 Athina Olympics, winning silver medals in both events, accompanied by Georgios Simiriotis in the mixed. Marinou lost in the finals of the singles to Esme Simiriotis, who may have been related to Marinou’s mixed doubles’ partner, but we have not been able to prove it. Along with Ioanna Tissamenou, whom she defeated in the first round of singles, Marinou was the first woman to compete for Greece at the Olympic Games.
