Biography

Figure skater Birgit Lorenz partnered Knut Schubert, representing East Germany at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics, finishing fifth. Both also competed in the 1981-84 World Championships placing ninth, seventh, eighth, and sixth. At the European Championships they earned two bronze medals in 1983 and 1984. In 1981 and 1985 the pair won two East German titles and were runners-up in 1982-84.

Lorenz later became a figure skating coach and worked at Chemnitz until 1996, before she moved to Switzerland where she worked until 2014. She was then diagnosed with cancer, eventually dying in 2019.
