Biography

Figure skaters Manuela Mager and her partner Uwe Bewersdorf became East German champions in 1977 and 1978. They won the bronze medal at the 1978 European Championships and the silver medal that year at the World Championships. Two years later they won the bronze medal at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic Games. They were the first pair to perform a throw loop in international competition. Mager was one of the very few sport stars of the former GDR who was allowed to legally leave the GDR and move to West Germany in the 1980s.
