Biography

Vince Carter was a legendary American basketball player known for his athleticism and jumping ability. He helped the USA win gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics where he famously dunked over French player Frédéric Weis, who stood 218 cm (7-2) tall. The French media later dubbed it “le dunk de la mort” (“the Dunk of Death”). Carter also won the NBA Dunk Contest in 2000.

Carter played in college at the University of North Carolina, leading them to two NCAA Final Four Appearances. Carter was chosen in the first round of the 1998 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors with the fifth overall pick, although he was immediately traded to the Toronto Raptors. Carter played with the Raptors through 2004, the start of the one of the longest ever NBA careers.

After the Raptors Carter played for the New Jersey Nets (2004-09), Orlando Magic (2009-10), Phoenix Suns (2010-11), Dallas Mavericks (2011-14), Memphis Grizzlies (2014-17), Sacramento Kings (2017-18), and Atlanta Hawks (2018-20).

Carter played in the NBA through 2020, a full 22 seasons. Through 2022 that is the NBA record for the most seasons played and he is one of only 10 NBA players to have played for 20+ years. He is the only NBA player (through 2022) to have played in four decades (1990s, 2000s, 2010s, 2020s), and is third all-time in the NBA in terms of games played, trailing only Robert Parish and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Carter was an eight-time NBA All-Star, consecutively from 2000-07. He was All-NBA Second Team in 2001 and third-team in 2000, after being named the 1999 NBA Rookie of the Year. In 2016 Carter won the Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award and in 2020 he received the NBA Sportsmanship Award. For his career he averaged 16.7 ppg, 4.3 rebounds/game, and 3.1 assists/game. He played small forward and shooting guard positions primarily.
