Biography

Monika Zernicek was an East German speed skater who competed in the 1976 Winter Olympics at Innsbruck. She placed outside the medal rankings, finishing 12th in the 1,000 metres. In 1974 she won her only East German national title, capturing the sprint all-round. She later married Olympic wrestler Harald Büttner.

Personal Bests: 500 – 43.8 (1976); 1000 – 1:25.5 (1976); 1500 – 2:14.6 (1976); 3000 – 4:41.3 (1976); 5000 – 8:42.6 (1976).
