Biography

Hansjörg “Jacky” Baltes competed at the 1984 Sarajevo and the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics as a speed skater in the middle- and long-distances, representing West Germany. In 1985, 1987 and 1988 he won West German all-round national titles.

Baltes later became a full professor for computer science at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. His interests were robotics, artificial intelligence, planning, machine learning, and distributed processing. He enjoyed many types of sports, including volleyball, basketball, aikido, tennis, badminton, football (soccer), and ice hockey.

Personal Bests: 500 – 39.42 (1989); 1000 – 1:20.45 (1983); 1500 – 1:56.76 (1988); 5000 – 6:55.11 (1988); 10000 – 14:42.18 (1986).
