Biography

Bodo Bittner had only a brief career as a bobsledder in 1974-76 starting at the Nations Cup with Georg Großmann. His best performances were a bronze medal at the 1976 Innsbruck Winter Games in the four-man event together with pilot Wolfgang Zimmerer, brakeman Peter Utzschneider and former hurdler Manfred Schumann, and the silver medal at the European Championships the same year. He grew up in the former GDR but fled to West Germany early in 1961, where he was educated as fighter pilot at the Bundeswehr and worked as a track and field coach at the University of Freiburg.
