Vlastimil Bubník was a forward who had a very long career, starting in 1949 with TJ Spartak Královo Pole, with whom he played four seasons. He moved to RH Brno in 1953 and played eight seasons for that side, moving to TJ ZKL Brno in 1962, playing for them for four years. He then moved to VZKG Ostrava and played for two seasons, before finishing his club career in Austria with VEU Feldkirch, retiring after the 1970-71 season. Bubník also played international level football (soccer), playing for Czechoslovakia at the 1960 European Nations’ Cup. He played for RH Brno in football, and in nine seasons in the Czechoslovak First League made 103 appearances, scoring 32 goals. He was capped 11 times and scored 4 goals for Czechoslovakia from 1957-60
On the ice, he represented Czechoslovakia at four Winter Olympics, winning bronze medals in 1960 and 1964; and at the World Championships in 1953-55, 1961, and 1963, winning a silver medal in 1961 and bronze medals in 1955 and 1963. In 1961 he was named the best forward at the World Championships. He was inducted into the International Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997 and remains Czechoslovakia’s all-time Olympic scoring leader with 37 points in his four appearances, and was tied for the all-time Olympic scoring lead (all nations) with Harry Watson (CAN) and Valery Kharlamov (URS), until they were surpassed in 2010 by Teemu Selänne (FIN).
