Biography

Representing Switzerland, Ueli Bächli’s first major international bobsledding medal came at the 1976 Winter Olympics, where he earned silver in the four-man event alongside Sepp Benz, Ruedi Marti, and Erich Schärer. The quartet repeated this feat at the 1978 and 1979 World Championships, and slipped to silver at the 1979 edition when the non-Olympian Hansjörg Trachsel temporarily replaced Marti.

Bächli, Schärer, Trachsel, and the non-Olympian Max Rüegg also captured silver at the 1979 European Championships. In the two-man event, Bächli and Schärer won silver and bronze at the 1979 and 1980 European Championships respectively. With his 1976 Olympic lineup, Bächli then took gold in the four-man at the 1980 European Championships and silver at that year’s Winter Olympics. His last major international medals came in 1982, when he earned silver and bronze at the World and European Championships respectively, both with Hans Hiltebrand.
