After finishing third in 1962 and second the following year, when beaten by the only other entrant, Welshman Hywel Evans eventually won the first of two consecutive British figure skating titles in 1964.
Evans finished second to Malcolm Cannon in the 1962 Commonwealth Winter Games. He also competed in the 1964 and 1965 World Championships, and the Europeans in 1963-65, but never finished higher than 15th.
