Biography

Stefan Hula first took up winter sports competing in downhill skiing, before taking up ski jumping and eventually finding success in the Nordic combined. Apart from a small break due to military service Hula represented BBTS Włókniarz Bielsko-Biała from 1961 to 1978, becoming the Polish Nordic combined champion in 1973. One year prior he had competed at the 1972 Sapporo Olympics, finishing 17th out of the 40 athletes. His best international result came at the World Championships in 1974, winning a bronze in the individual event. Hula returned to the Olympics for the 1976 Innsbruck Games where he finished 16th. He was in sixth place overall following the ski jumping element, but had a poor performance in the cross-country, dropping down the order. His son, also named Stefan, competed in ski jumping at four Olympic Games, winning a team bronze in Pyeongchang in 2018.
