Biography

With 285 caps, Jörgen Jönsson is, as of 2013, the record holder for most games played on the Swedish national team. Jönsson started playing hockey with Rögle BK in 1990, but from 1995-99 played with Färjestad BK and won Swedish titles with them in 1997 and 1998. He was also awarded the Guldpucken award as the best player of the 1997 Swedish Championships. Jönsson was drafted by the Calgary Flames of the NHL in 1994, but his rights were traded to the New York Islanders in 1998. Jönsson joined the NHL in 1999, but his only season in North America was not very successful. After 68 games with Islanders during 1999-00 season, Jönsson was traded to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and finished his season playing 11 games for them. After one season in North America, Jönsson moved back to Europe and returned to Färjestad, where he played until the end of his career in 2009, winning two more Swedish titles with Färjestad, in 2002 and 2006.

Internationally Jönsson played at four Winter Olympic Games (1994-06), 12 World Championships (1994 and 1997-07) and the 2004 World Cup. He won Olympic golds in 1994 and 2006, was World Champion in 1998 and 2006, won silvers at the 1997, 2003 and 2004 World Championships and bronzes at the 1994, 1999, 2001 and 2002 World Championships. After finishing his sporting career, Jönsson worked as an assistant coach with Färjestad BK from 2009-12 and in 2012 became the general manager of Färjestad BK. Jönsson was awarded the Stora Grabbars Märke (Big Boys’ Badge) #156 in ice hockey. His younger brother Kenny was also an ice hockey player, who won gold medals at the 1994 and 2006 Olympics.
