Biography

Felix Kaspar won a bronze medal at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Winter Olympics and was considered an early favourite for the men’s figure skating gold medal at the 1940 Games, as he was the reigning World and European Champion from 1937 and 1938. In 1935 he also won silver at the Europeans and, in 1936, added a bronze at the Worlds. In 1939, Kaspar was the first figure skater to perform a double Salchow.

Kaspar, who won the Austrian nationals in 1935, 1937, and 1938, was on tour in Australia when Germany invaded Austria, putting an end to his 1940 Olympic hopes. After the war he settled in California where he became a figure skating coach. Kaspar was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1998. In 2003, he died from Alzheimer disease.
